This past week here in Houston, at Our Lady of Walsingham we had our 11th annual week-long summer camp for the children of the parish, Catholic Kids Camp. The activity drew roughly 320 campers and about 65 volunteers. This was the first year that I participated as a volunteer. What a blessing and honor it was to be a part of this event. I along with my fellow volunteer, Stacey Stevens, were assigned to “Snacks & Saints – Foothills of Purgatory”. It was our mission to keep some of our younger campers bodily nourished with theme inspired snacks and spiritually nourished with stories of saints and angels.
I know that the intention of the camp is to bring the children of Our Lady of Walsingham nearer to God through catechesis and living the faith. However, what I experienced was unexpected. Simply to see and to be part of the joy and beauty ever-present this past week was a blessing. I am honored to have been present and in some small way to have contributed. Truly an experience that has shown that God can be found in the joyful face of a child.
I wanted to end by expressing my thanks and appreciation to all involved. This was a tremendous undertaking, I would especially like to thank Rebecca Hill for her tireless dedication as camp coordinator.
Looking forward to Catholic Kids Camp 2026!!!
